  • The following post features a Career Snapshot of Construction Managers. Have you ever wondered who actually keeps a major construction project on schedule, within budget, and moving in the right direction? Read: How to Handle Getting Ghosted After an Interview Career Snapshot: Aerospace Engineers Construction managers are responsible for coordinating nearly every moving part of a construction project. If you're considering this profession, it's important to understand what goes into it. Here's what you need to know. Overview Construction managers plan, coordinate, budget, and supervise construction projects from start to finish. They may oversee residential and commercial buildings, industrial projects, roads, bridges, and other types of construction. Many work for construction companies or specialty trade contractors, while others are self-employed. Some managers oversee a single large project, while others may be responsible for several projects at the same time. A construction manager has to keep a lot of pieces moving at once. One of the biggest challenges is that a delay in one part of a project can quickly affect everything else, making problem-solving an important part of the job. What They Do A typical day might include reviewing schedules and budgets, meeting with subcontractors, checking progress at a jobsite, resolving a construction problem, or discussing project changes with a client. Construction managers also work closely with architects, engineers, inspectors, and other construction professionals. On larger projects, they may supervise other managers who are responsible for specific phases of construction. Much of the job involves making sure the project stays on schedule and within budget while meeting design specifications and building and safety requirements. Good construction managers need to be comfortable making decisions when things don't go according to plan. A material delivery can be delayed, weather can disrupt a schedule, or an unexpected problem can appear once construction is underway. Work Environment Construction managers may have a main office, but they typically spend much of their time in a field office at the construction site. Managers overseeing multiple projects may travel between different worksites, sometimes across state lines or away from home for extended periods. The work environment can change considerably depending on the project. One day may involve meetings in an office, while another requires walking a large construction site and coordinating with subcontractors and tradespeople. Most construction managers work full time, and schedules can extend beyond 40 hours when projects approach important deadlines. Some may also need to remain available around the clock when emergencies arise. The job offers plenty of variety, but that variety comes with responsibility. When something goes wrong on a project, the construction manager is often one of the people expected to figure out what happens next. Education & Training Construction managers typically need a bachelor's degree in construction management, construction, business, engineering, or a related field. Coursework may include construction methods, cost estimation, project management, mathematics, communications, and business. Construction experience can also be valuable, particularly for people without a bachelor's degree. Someone with several years of experience in carpentry, masonry, or another construction specialty may eventually move into management, although self-employment as a general contractor may be a more common path. New construction managers typically receive on-the-job training under the guidance of an experienced manager. Depending on the employer, this training can last anywhere from about a year to several years. Some states require construction managers to be licensed, so requirements should be checked based on where you plan to work. Salary Expectations The median annual salary for construction managers was $114,990 in 2025. Earnings vary based on experience, geographic location, employer, project size, and the type of construction being managed. Managing larger or more complex projects can provide opportunities for increased responsibility and compensation. Education and experience can both play an important role in reaching higher-level positions. Construction managers who develop strong skills in budgeting, scheduling, project coordination, and client management can position themselves for advancement. Career Outlook The outlook for construction managers is particularly strong. Employment is projected to grow 9% between 2025 and 2035, much faster than the average for all occupations. Approximately 49,700 openings are expected each year as employers add workers and replace construction managers who retire or move into other occupations. Population and business growth should continue to generate construction projects involving homes, offices, hospitals, schools, retail buildings, and other structures. Infrastructure improvements and building renovations should also contribute to demand. Construction itself is becoming more complex as building technology and construction processes evolve. Technology can make managers more productive, but increasingly complicated projects still require people who can coordinate teams, control costs, solve problems, and keep everything moving toward completion. Resume Considerations When you're building a resume for a Construction Manager position, highlight the size, complexity, and results of the projects you've managed. Accomplishments such as completing projects on schedule, controlling costs, managing subcontractors, resolving construction problems, and overseeing multiple projects can help employers understand the scope of your experience. Quantify project values, budgets, team sizes, timelines, or other results whenever possible. Education, certifications, and construction experience should also be clearly identified. Employers may look for experience with project scheduling, cost estimation, contract administration, safety, and subcontractor management, along with keywords such as construction management, project management, budgeting, scheduling, and project coordination. Career changers can emphasize transferable experience in areas such as project coordination, budgeting, vendor management, scheduling, and team leadership. In Conclusion In conclusion, I hope you find this post helpful for understanding the career of a Construction Manager. If you enjoy managing complex projects, solving problems, working with different types of professionals, and seeing a project develop from plans into a finished structure, construction management could be an excellent career choice.
